Tutorial Video: The Basics: Fielding A Ground Ball
- Keep the drill fast paced using multiple stations at once.
- It may be faster paced if the initial players just roll the ball back to the coaches.
- Emphasize keeping the glove low to prevent a ball from going underneath.
- Emphasize the top hand is a protection if the ball takes a bad bounce.
- Emphasize like an Alligator would close its jaw, that is how you should capture the ball when it hits the glove.
- Roll the ball directly to the player.
- Roll the ball slow and have them charge the ball (still using the alligator hands)
- Roll the ball to the left and have them do a quick shuffle step to move to the ball (still using Alligator hands)
- Roll the ball to the right and have them do a quick shuffle step to the ball (still using Alligator hands)
- Roll the ball slow and have them charge the ball but if the ball is slow enough, bare hand the ball with the throwing hand. (No Alligator)
Note: Coaches, do not use a bat until this is mastered.
Next Level: incorporate a drill that work on the back hand.
