Walter Zahn
Years Active: 1947 - 1967
Walter Zahn, a dedicated Charter Member of the Optimist Club of Green Bay, was born in 1914 in Gillett, Wisconsin. He attended grade school and high school in Gillett and Shawano before graduating from La Crosse State (now UW–La Crosse). Walter spent his career in education, teaching at several locations and ultimately at Franklin Middle School, where he taught English and audiovisual programs before becoming Principal. His passion for student development extended beyond the classroom—he also sponsored an after-school Photography Club, offering Franklin students creative opportunities outside regular hours.
Walter’s commitment to service and leadership within the Club was exceptional. In 1948, he served as Boys Work Chairman and began coordinating the Oratorical Contest, a program he remained deeply involved with for the next 10–15 years. From 1950 to 1953, he organized nearly all Club programs, and in 1951–1952 he simultaneously served as Club President, Program Chair, and a member of the Publicity Committee. He also chaired the Camp Committee, led Green Bay’s efforts as host site for the State Convention, and attended the International Convention during 1952–1953.
Widely respected for his dedication, Walter earned numerous honors, including recognition for sponsoring over ten new members, being voted Outstanding Optimist in 1953–1954, and multiple perfect-attendance awards across the 1950s. Together with his wife—who personally called members each week to encourage attendance and announce speakers—Walter helped foster a culture of engagement and fellowship. He achieved the highest meeting attendance among all members for nine years.
A gifted mentor, Walter introduced the “Uncle Plan” in 1954–1955 to support troubled youth and started the Boy of the Month program in 1958–1959, which honored outstanding young men in the community for several years. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he conducted all induction ceremonies for new members, leaving a mark on generations of Optimists.
Walter’s leadership extended to the District level as well. He served as Lt. Governor in 1954–1955 and District Governor in 1964–1965, earning distinction for outstanding leadership. He also contributed his talents beyond Optimism, serving as Public Relations Chairman for the Wisconsin Upper Michigan District of Kiwanis International.
A loyal and active member until 1967, Walter Zahn’s decades of service—as an educator, mentor, organizer, and leader—left a lasting legacy in both the Optimist Club of Green Bay and the wider community.
